The Park of many parts
Sanctuary Park is 8.4 hectares and about one kilometre along Joyce Road, Pyes Pa within the Tauranga City boundary. It is close to extensive new developments and also situated near the historic "Te Ranga" site.
Sanctuary Park aims to be:
- a Community Centre
- a Native Bush Restoration Project
- a Protected Wetlands
- a Bird Park & Whitebait breeding area
- a Picnic and Recreation area
- a Nature Education facility
Phase One - complete!
Phase 1 of the development of Sanctuary Park included:
- continued care of the existing organic kiwifruit orchard
- developing a water management system for the wetlands including bridge building
- planting new native trees and shrubs
- building walking tracks including a boardwalk next to the wetlands
- clearing of the amphitheatre area
- developing strategic relationships with local council
- developing working relationships with sponsors
Public Opening
The Park was officially opened on Saturday October 15 2011 by MP for Tauranga, Hon. Simon Bridges. Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby and Regional Council Chairman John Cronin also officiated.
Phase Two
Work continues through monthly working bees involving plant maintenance and extending the walkway as well as developing a picnic area.
